South African National Health Laboratory Service selects Q-Pulse as QMS solution

For pathology laboratories, maintaining and improving quality is vital in making sure that their services are fit for purpose and that users can access their services at the point of need. In managing their quality management systems (QMS), the South African National Health Laboratory Services (NHLS) have chosen Q-Pulse, the compliance management solution from Scottish software developers Gael Ltd.

With more than 250 laboratories and more than 5,500 employees, the NHLS is the largest diagnostic pathology service in South Africa, serving 80% of the country's population and providing laboratory services to the South African Department of Health, provincial hospitals, local authorities and medical practitioners.

Q-Pulse can help laboratories to deliver consistent and reliable diagnostic services, as well as to identify opportunities to continually improve the quality of services, from tracking corrective and preventive actions to measuring the effectiveness of the QMS.

Hundreds of pathology laboratories all over the world including Australia, Canada, Hong Kong and the United States manage their accreditation with Q-Pulse to make sure that they can achieve recognised standards of practice, and that users can access the services that they need, when they need them.

‘We use common management systems across our network of laboratories, and a centralised system for managing quality helps us both to avoid the duplication of services and to reduce wastage and cost-inefficiency,’ explains Sarvashni Moodliar, National Q-Pulse Systems Manager at the NHLS. ‘Most importantly, this helps us in creating a world-class national health laboratory service to which all South Africans have access.’

‘In selecting a solution to manage our QMS, we wanted to make required information available to make sure that staff were able to access accurate and up-to-date information,’ says Sarvashni. ‘This allows us to avoid using outdated documentation and processes, as well as to prevent the use of uncontrolled copies of documentation not only throughout the laboratory but across the service.

Q-Pulse’s integrated web functionality for managing Documents, CA/PA and Audits provides organisations with a secure web-based interface that offers centralised and customisable access to compliance activities and actions in all areas of the organisation through Internet Explorer.

‘Our network also includes pathology departments and laboratories in universities across South Africa, and, having successfully deployed the entire system at several of our accredited academic sites to manage their QMS, we have found Q-Pulse powerful, yet easy to use,’ says Sarvashni.

‘With more than 50 of our laboratories now managing their controlled documentation through Q-Pulse, we’ve been able to streamline distribution and change control, store and retrieve our documents securely, and provide individuals, groups or disciplines with information that is relevant to them.’
